(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 16, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia -- While watching individuals participate on the biggest loser may be inspiring, it certainly is doing no good for one’s own health. While watching these contestants lose 100 lbs may be inspiring, it is possible to be gaining weight while watching such efforts to improve.
A study from Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta Found that people who have been show short clips of exercising on the show were actually less likely to do physical activity themselves.
"The depictions of exercise on shows like The Biggest Loser are really negative," said the study’s lead author, Tanya Berry, who is the Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity Promotion. "People are screaming and crying and throwing up, and if you're not a regular exerciser you might think this is what exercise is that it's this horrible experience where you have to push yourself to the extremes and the limits, which is completely wrong."
The Biggest Loser has been criticized for its depiction of such extreme efforts by both the contestants and the trainers in regards to the weight loss itself, and the programs contestants are put through. The weight loss seen by contestants are often double-digit within a week’s time, and that has some doctors and specialists worried.
"I think a lot of people can feel quite defeated that they're losing weight in what we would call a recommended amount [one to two pounds a week], but they would have been voted off the show immediately," Robert Kushner, the clinical director of the Northwestern University Comprehensive Center on Obesity, told LiveScience. "So the message, to me, is just all wrong."
Kai Hibbard of season three has spoken out against the process of weight loss conveyed in the show. She told CBS The Early Show, “I have people that come up to me and talk to me and ask me why they can’t lose 12 pounds in a week when I did. It did not happen. It’s TV…a week is not a week in TV.”
The big concern by those like Berry is that there are many who can be turned off to the idea of working out altogether. Those who watched clips from the Biggest Loser showed a much more negative attitude toward working out than those who watched other programs.
