This effort is to minimize the increase in traffic accidents. Priority has been given to high accident intersections.
Stamford, Connecticut police have received an overwhelming number of car accident reports since Hurricane Sandy. Non-working traffic lights has resulted in drivers inability to maneuver through intersections without traffic light assistance. Also noted, drivers are ignoring the rules of the road, which contributes to a higher accident rate.
According to The Department of Motor Vehicles, at a four-way stop, the driver reaching the intersection first only continues after first coming to a complete stop. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver to the right proceeds first, according to Connecticut law. Drivers must always yield to vehicles coming from the right at intersections without a stop or yield sign, or traffic signal.
On one occasion, Captain Wuenneman stopped for a no light intersection and the driver behind him continued around his car and drove through the intersection without stopping. When the driver was pulled over he explained that he did not know the law.
Minor fender bender accidents have also risen from rushing and carelessness.
Fallen tree damage has also increased car repair estimates and the automotive damage due to Hurricane Sandy will keep many auto body specialists occupied through the end of the year. It may be good for business, but no one wants people to get hurt.
