(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A former team doctor for the Australian Commonwealth Games has is taking a stand, calling for authorities to discontinue their war on drugs when it comes to steroid use. The doctor claims that steroids do not harm individuals if the substances are utilized properly. Following the Lance Armstrong and cycling doping scandals, PEDs have found their way to the forefront yet again. Most commentators and pundits in the sports realm have been calling for stronger testing and more strict rules against the drug use. Yet, Dr. Tony Millar is taking a stance against the common ground.
Millar is the founder of Australia’s first sports medicine clinic and St. George’s doctor for eight of the 11 rugby premierships in the 1950s and ‘60s. He stated, “[steroids] don’t hurt [players] if they do it properly.” Millar states that athletes ought to be able to utilize the compounds as long as there are administered by health professionals. “The thing they have told me was that they were unfair. Well, they were given to everybody - and that is more than you can say about the world's best coaches and best equipment. They say that people won't watch things but we all know that drugs are used in sports and they're building bigger and bigger stadiums.''
Millar was a team doctor for the three Commonwealth Game campaigns before he was sacked for a steroid article he wrote. Now 87, the doctor has been practicing medicine for 67 years, and claims he has administered steroids to over 5,000 clients as part of a “harm reduction program”. He denies giving any compounds to the Dragons during his oversight. He also denied giving any to Commonwealth Games athletes. ''I would prescribe these anabolic steroids, monitor you and bring you back when you finished to follow you up to see what happened," said the inaugural City2Surf doctor. ''I didn't have any deaths, no heart problems and I did this for some 20 years. It all depends on what you do with whatever it is. Guns are very dangerous, if you put them up to your head and pull the trigger. But they're not dangerous if you put them in a drawer.” Millar continued, stating, ''There are more steroids taken now than there were 30 years ago and there's no evidence of an increased death rate from them.''
