(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 29, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- New research shows that the majority of self-employed skilled tradespeople are completing more than five additional hours of work per week that they are not getting paid for.
Based on minimum wage figures, that is the equivalent of £1,075 ($1,724) in lost earnings, which adds up to £4.8 billion ($7.7 billion) a year. The average comes out to 5.29 hours of unpaid work every week, equaling 275 hours a year.
The research, conducted by insurance and financial services company Direct Line, also showed that approximately one in 10 tradespeople reported working more than 10 hours per week unpaid. The research actually shows that those workers who had been on the job longer were more likely to provide more unpaid work.
Self-employed workers with 10 years or less experience, according to the research, work an average of 34 hours per week. Conversely, with more than 10 years experience typically work 41.8 hours each week.
In the United Kingdom, for example, the average for the overall workforce is 37 hours per week while self-employed workers average 40 hours per week.
"Tradespeople are the unsung heroes leading the way in nursing our economy back to health," said Jazz Gakhal, head of Direct Line for Business. "The research shows that, despite the sometimes negative publicity that surrounds the work ethic of tradespeople, they are doing more than their fair share and setting the right example for the rest of the U.K.'s workforce.
"Given these extra accumulated working hours," Gakhal added, "it is crucial that tradespeople have the right insurance cover for their business to ensure that all these extra hours worked are adequately compensated in the event of an accident."
