(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 19, 2012 ) Goshen, MA – Do you have a verbal talent? And if so, is it an ability to reel off natural-sounding fake words, a knack for selecting the correctly words for someone else’s article or a skill at putting together emotionally affecting song lyrics? According to creativity expert Marcia Yudkin, being as specific as possible in identifying what you’re good at lays the groundwork for personal and professional achievement. Her new book, Inspired! How to Be More Original, Insightful and Productive in Your Work, offers advice on recognizing and harnessing unique talents (http://www.yudkin.com/inspired.htm ).
“Psychologists now talk about seven types of intelligence rather than only one type, but we actually need to think in terms of thousands of kinds of talents,” says Yudkin, a business mentor and the author of 16 previous books. “This then becomes the foundation for career success or entrepreneurial distinctiveness.”
Her advice includes:
* Beware of preconceptions about correlations between personality types and talents. “For example, I always assumed that a good speaker had to be extroverted,” Yudkin says. “However, even though I’m normally a quiet, choose-my-words-carefully kind of person, I’m good enough at speaking for workshop and seminar fees to comprise 20 percent of my income.”
* The very thing that drives you or others around you crazy may be the talent you should develop and highlight. Henny Youngman, for instance, was punished throughout his childhood for the joking around that he later used to make a name for himself as a comedian.
* Try identifying a weakness and turning it upside down as something you are good at. For example, someone who can’t finish things without a deadline is actually very good at completing things when he or she has a deadline.
Inspired! How to Be More Original, Insightful and Productive in Your Work provides a wealth of examples, research studies, anecdotes and practical suggestions on identifying creative strengths, boosting intuition, increasing originality, discovering natural motivation and much more. The book is available in paperback for $19.95 at Amazon.com or BN.com and for $9.99 in Amazon’s Kindle store or Barnes & Noble’s Nook store.
