Hemodialysis Market Size, Share, Trends, and Growth 2019-2026

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 17, 2019 ) Market Overview
Kidneys remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood. When kidney function goes below 10% to 15%, it is no longer able to filter blood. This causes toxins to build up in the body along with excess fluid. If the kidneys do not function normally, this process is done by hemodialysis. Hemodialysis functions are similar to an artificial kidney in patients with kidney failure and other renal impairments. Hemodialysis uses the artificial membrane to remove waste, such as urea, from the blood, restore the proper balance of electrolytes in the blood, and eliminate extra fluid from the body. There are different types of hemodialysis: in-center hemodialysis is performed in hospitals or dialysis centers, home hemodialysis is done at home three days a week in the presence of a technician, daily home hemodialysis is done at home five to seven days a week, and nocturnal home hemodialysis is done overnight in six to eight hours.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, 10% of the global population is affected by chronic kidney disease out of which over two million people currently receive treatment with dialysis or a kidney transplant. The majority of these people are treated in only five countries U.S., Japan, Germany, Brazil, and Italy. These five countries represent only 12% of the world’s population. Only 20% are treated in about 100 developing countries which make up over 50% of the world’s population.

The global hemodialysis market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% during the forecast period (2019-2026).

Market Dynamics
The major drivers fueling the growth of the market are an increase in the incidence of hypertension and diabetes, rise in a number of end-stage renal disorder patients, and rise in the geriatric population.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre, in the US, around 4.1 million patients were treated for end-stage renal disease globally at the end of 2016, out of which about 30% are attributed to high blood pressure. Out of those 3.7 million patients, almost 3 million were undergoing dialysis treatment. Moreover, according to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, diabetes was the main cause of kidney failure in about 40% of new cases in 2017. The rising global prevalence of hypertension and diabetes is, therefore, a major growth driver for the global hemodialysis market.

Age is one of the main risk factors of chronic kidney disease. Aging affects the kidney and is responsible for structural and functional changes that affect the kidney function. In addition, the elderly are more prone to chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are the key factors responsible for kidney impairment. According to the United Nations Population Division, the global population of individuals aged 60 years and above is expected to increase from 901 million in 2015 to 1.4 billion by 2050. The incidence of kidney disease increases after the age of 50 years and is most common after 70 years of age.

Market Restraints
Numerous product recalls, increase in kidney transplantation and risks and complications associated with dialysis are going to restrain the market in the forecast period.

There are several side effects associated with the treatment of hemodialyses such as itching, infections, anemia, pericarditis, hyperkalemia, hypotension, hypertension, muscles cramps and bone diseases. Some of the other long-term risks involved in hemodialysis include inadequate filtering of wastes, the formation of clots in the dialysis graft or fistula, and the onset of cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrhythmias. The fear of such outcomes prevents people from undergoing hemodialysis treatment.

Market Segmentation
The global hemodialysis market can be segmented by product type as Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter, Chronic Hemodialysis Catheter, and Acute Hemodialysis Catheter, by modality as In-Center Hemodialysis and Home Hemodialysis, by the end user as a hospital, dialysis centers, and homecare.

Chronic hemodialysis catheters accounted for the largest market share of more than 60% in 2018. Cuffed and tunneled type catheter is used for chronic hemodialysis, where access is required for more than three weeks. Chronic dialysis catheters are generally inserted in the chest or neck. Industry players are investing in advanced technologies including tip design to reduce malfunctions, infections and improve longer effectiveness. Angiodynamics, Teleflex and Medtronic offer Chronic Hemodialysis Catheters.

Home hemodialysis can be performed at home using advanced machinery. Home hemodialysis is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.38% over the period of forecast. According to the National Kidney Foundation, in the year 2018, around 10% of the global population was affected by chronic kidney diseases, and the majority of them constitute of geriatric population. Home dialysis is affordable and also provides ease and convenience that increases its preference among the geriatric population. Home hemodialysis is expected to increase considerably with increasing services by industry players.

Geographical Analysis
Geographically, the global hemodialysis market is divided into North America, Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa.

North America accounted for a dominant share of more than 35% in 2018. Among emerging markets, Asia Pacific is estimated to exhibit the highest CAGR of 10.21% over the period of forecast. North America is dominating the market due to the increasing incidence of kidney diseases, the rising number of diabetes and hypertension patients, and technological advancements in the healthcare industry. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Health Information Center, in 2018 over 750,000 people in the U.S. have kidney failure. Of these, 600,000 individuals are on dialysis, and roughly 150,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant. New cases of end-stage renal disease are growing with a rate of 370 per million per year in the US.

The Asia Pacific is the largest and the leading market for hemodialysis catheters. Haemodialysis catheters segment is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 8.3% over the period of forecast. Increasing prevalence of diabetes in the Asia-Pacific region ultimately affects kidney functioning and escalate the demand for dialysis treatments. Emerging economies such as India have a high prevalence of obesity and diabetes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 50 million people in India suffer from diabetes, and the majority of them suffer from kidney disorders.

Competitive Trends
Some of the key players in the market are Fresenius Medical Care, DaVita Healthcare Partners, Baxter International, B. Braun Melsungen, Nipro Corporation, Diaverum Deutschland GmbH, Nikkiso Co. Ltd., NxStage Medical and Angio Dynamics.

The dialysis catheters market across the globe is highly competitive with the presence of both global and local vendors. The sustainability of small manufacturers is uncertain as their revenues are entirely dependent on the demand for catheters and healthcare reforms in the country. Global manufacturers focus on enhancing their product portfolio with the use of advanced technology and more compatible materials to reduce the risk of catheter-associated blood-stream infections.

In November 2017, Baxter Canada launched hemodialysis (HDx) enabled by THERANOVA, a new therapy for hemodialysis (HD) patients that has the potential to set a new standard of renal care for the greater than 20,000 hemodialysis patients in Canada.

In January 2019, Fresenius Medical Care launched 4008A dialysis machine; the company is aiming to improve accessibility to life-sustaining dialysis treatment for patients in the countries of Asia-Pacific who are living with end-stage renal disease.
