(Medical-NewsWire.com, February 02, 2013 ) Boca Raton, FL -- A study published in the Journal of Periodontal Research has noted that blackberries have an antibacterial property that may help promote stronger gums through the stopping of gum disease development.
The berries apparently not only promote healthy teeth and gums, as previous studies have shown that the ingredients within the berries can help stop the spreading of cancerous cells within the body.
Dr. Nigel Carter commented on the berries, stating “Having a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and fresh produce to provide anti-oxidants is something we should all be striving to achieve.” Carter is the Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation.
“It can help to prevent a number of oral health problems including gum disease and oral cancer, not to mention potential heart problems too. Given we are only a few days into the new year, if you have not adopted a New Year’s resolution it is well worth considering improving your diet.”
Nigel went on the comment that people who add blackberries to their dients can use the berries as an addition to their common dental hygiene routines. He stressed that, of course, one should not use it as a substitute to proper dental care in the more common aspects, such as brushing and flossing.
Dental hygiene “does not take up much time or a lot of money” he said, but is still often neglected.
When one is able to follow the simple routines used to promote proper gum-care, and one then adds blackberries to a diet, one can easily prevent the onset of gum disease, says Dr. Carter. According to dental health specialists, brushing for two minutes twice per day, utilizing fluoride toothpaste, and using floss will help in the daily prevention of disease. Visiting a dentist on regular occasions is also highly recommended to help stop the spread of tooth decay.
