(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 13, 2013 ) Altamonte Springs, FL -- According to a new study provided by the UNC-Chapel Hill, utilizing fluoride in water significantly reduces the tooth decay of an individual. That fact remains true even if that individual did not start using the fluoride-water until adulthood.
In the new study, the researchers examined the dental records of 3,779 older teens and adults that spent varying figures of time living in communities with fluoridated water supplies.
“We found there are protective effects for adults and, equally important, that the protection occurs even if those adults didn’t have access to fluoridated water when they were children,” said Gary Slade, director of the oral epidemiology Ph.D. program at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.
Slade said many people think of tooth decay as a childhood issue, but adults are equally vulnerable. Today’s adults with good dental health may have long years of living with fluoridated water supplies to thank, he said.
“It’s an escalating benefit,” Slade said. “The more prolonged your exposure to drinking fluoridated water, the better.”
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in the earth which can be used to strengthen tooth enamel. It is often used in toothpaste, and most dentists use it during rinses. However, it is the day-to-day use of fluoridated water that appears to have shown the most significant impact, according to the study.
The Campaign for Dental Health, which is a coalition of dental groups noted that among individuals over 65, tooth loss has dropped by 21% since 1961, when fluoridation was introduced to a wide spectrum of society.
Slade worked with in Australia when he ventured to study the effects in the 1990s. Along with other researchers from the University of Adelaide, Slade traced dental histories of subjects that were 15 years or older back to the year 1963, three years after the country began its fluoridated water treatment.
Opponents of fluoridation have argued that the process causes cancer and poses other significant health risks. However, according to Ward, no such correlation has been exhibited.
“In my estimation, and in the estimation of scientists, the opponents are using flawed data,” Ward said.
