Study Finds Doctors Handing Out Potentially Dangerous Drugs

(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 21, 2013 ) Oklahoma City, OK -- Doctors within the United States are routinely prescribing potentially dangerous drugs to elderly patients, according to a new study.

The problem seems to be particularly settled within the South, suggests the new study. The analysis has found that more than 20% of seniors that are on Medicare in the South were prescribed medications that health officials would state doctors should avoid giving to older patients. The reason is based upon the potential side effects and addictive qualities. Compared with people 65 years of age or older living within New England, those residing from Texas to South Carolina were nearly 12% more likely to be handed the high-risk medication.

The researchers have noted that one of the likely factors is education, as well as socioeconomic status, and access to quality medical care. As socioeconomic status fell, the likelihood of being prescribed high-risk drugs increased. Even after account for such factors, researchers found the disparity continued to persist.

“We can’t specifically identify the reason the southern states have these rates that are so much higher,” said Dr. Amal Trivedi, an author of the study and an assistant professor of health services, policy and practice at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School. “But I think it’s important for physicians and patients to be aware of it.”

Trivedi and his colleagues have published the conclusions and findings in The Journal of General Internal Medicine. For the study, they referred to a list of 110 prescription drugs to avoid when dealing with the elderly. The list was compiled by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Many drugs are currently widely used, and often these drugs have moderate or low side effects for younger patients, which become magnified in the elderly.

“We started this study because we know that these medications are likely to have more harms than benefits in older patients,” Dr. Trivedi said. “We have tried to reduce the use of these medications, and it’s important to figure out exactly how common they are among the elderly and what types of factors contribute to their use.”
