Health Shire Releases New Info-Graphic on Causes of Depression

(Medical-NewsWire.com, April 25, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- HealthShire.com recently launched a new info-graphic on depression. With important facts and vital statistics, this informative piece contains vital information on this common disorder. According to the infographic, an astounding 18.8 million American adults suffer with depression. This is 9.5% of the U.S. population, including 18 year olds that have been diagnosed with depressive disorders.

Regardless of age, depression affects millions of people across the country. In fact, depression can set in as early as 14.5 years of age. It also affects people from all walks of life, regardless of geographic location, demographic, or social position. While depression can strike at anytime, women are 2X more likely to suffer from it than men. In fact, one out of 10 women shows signs of depression after giving birth. Women between the ages of 25-44 are more susceptible to depression as well.

While depression continues to rise in America, it can be effectively treated with medication and psychotherapy. Sadly, 80% of people afflicted with depression do not receive adequate treatment. The infographic also highlights certain ethnic groups and U.S. states that have high numbers of depression cases. This includes African Americans and Hispanics at 4%. States with higher depression rates also have a number of factors in common. This includes obesity, heart disease, stroke, sleep disorders, lack of education, and especially lack of medical coverage.

With 12.4 million women and 6.4 million men suffering from depression in the U.S., experts believe the number will steady increase in the years ahead. This is partly due to lack of medical insurance to secure timely treatments. In fact, the average medical cost associated with treating depression is $22,960. This is far more than $11,365, which is the average medical cost for a healthy American.

The infographic also chronicles the rise of depression in many students. According to a 2012 student survey, 46.5% of students felt hopeless. Many of them also felt overwhelmed by existing educational duties and long term expectations. Students surveyed also felt extreme fatigue, along with sadness and isolation. While 31.3% of students found it difficult to function, 7.1% of students contemplated suicide. An additional 1.2% of students also attempted suicide, while 5.5% intentionally caused physical harm to themselves. The latter only proves that depression can lead to severe consequence and self destruction. The survey was courtesy of the American College Health Association: National College Health Assessment.

According to the infographic, there are also 4 common depressive conditions. This includes Atypical Depression, which affects more than 40% of the population each year. The latter is also very common in at least 70% of women. There is also childhood depression, which can affect children as young as 3 years old. The most common signs associated with this are sadness and irritability. In fact, 2.5% of children suffer from depression, and find it difficult to enjoy activities. Teenage depression also affects 8.3% of teens residing in the U.S. There is also clinical depression, which is considered a major depressive disorder. With over 9.9 million Americans diagnosed with clinical depression, the time to get professional help is now.
