(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to the latest numbers from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, the state now has nearly 1.7 million individuals (out of the 4-million residents) who lack a form of dental insurance. That total is more than 10 times the number of individuals who attend to 2012 Kentucky Derby, and is a number that is not a welcome one for many.
More than half of all adults who reside in Kentucky lack coverage for dental care, with nearly four of every 10 telling the foundation that they do not have a personal dentist or oral health provider. Nearly eight-of-ten out of that 39% stated they have not visited the dentist in over five years.
The KHIP study has noted correlations between age, education, and income increases do seem to have a positive relation to the quality and frequency of dental care for individuals.
Also recorded was a startling tally of 92% of all Kentucky adults saying that they do not owe money for dental bills, while nearly 37% report that at least one person within the household
skipped dental care check-ups in the last year due to the general cost. This shows that individuals cannot find the rationale to even receive care on an advance, and would rather avoid the debt that could come from the care.
The poll also found that 61% of adults visited the dentist within 12 months, as compared to 70% of adults across the national, according to number provided by the Center of Disease Control.
The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky also noted that routine dental care is highly essential for maintaining health and well-being in general. “Poor oral health can have a negative effect on a person’s nutrition, appearance and speech,” it said. “Pain and suffering because of poor oral health can lower quality of life by limiting one’s ability to sleep, work and socialize.” The report
added that the consequences can include risk of infection, heart disease and death.
