According to assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco Paradi Mirmirani, “Hair myths, such as brushing your hair one hundred strokes a day, can cause split ends and hair loss”.
However, the American Academy of Dermatology has released guidelines along with the statement that warns against the 100-strokes-a-day myth: First, people should handle wet hair as little possible, because it breaks more easily when combed or brushed. People with lightly colored hair, however, should brush when wet to actually decrease breakage, because brushing dry, curly hair, causes split ends.
Brushing should be kept at a minimum, so as long as hair doesn’t have any tangles, it should be left alone.
Long-lasting hold styling products can also cause hair to break and lead to hair loss over time. Use chemicals as little as possible, and combs and brushes should never be used after a product has been applied to the hair, because chances of breakage are raised.
