(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 20, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – The National Association on Mental Illness (NAMI) has held walking fundraisers for the past 11 years, becoming instrumental in raising awareness of mental health. The walks show support for people who have mental illnesses and are helping to change the way mental illness is viewed in the United States.
Some studies have shown that one in four adults, or almost 60 million Americans, suffer from some type of mental illness. The World Health Organization reports that mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. Mental illness affects all ages.
With so many people affected, NAMI feels that through a grassroots effort they can help by providing a strong voice for advocacy and help shape public policy on issues that touch the mentally ill. The 34 year old organization states that they “advocate for access to services, treatment, supports and research and [are] steadfast in [their] commitment to raise awareness and build a community for hope for all of those in need.”
In addition to raising awareness, the NAMIWalks, as they are called, go a long way to helping to fund the organization to allow it to promote solutions, provide research funding and provide other community assistance programs such as housing. It is projected that the walks will raise $12 million in 2014 when they are held in at least 88 cities and engage over 140,000 walkers and supporters. Much of the money raised will stay in the community and state where the walk is held to be used in local programs.
