(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 31, 2013 ) Ashland, OR -- Brian Lovett, a spokesperson for Apex Natural™, said "There is a staggering amount of studies and information online about Turmeric Curcumin but it can be confusing what to look for in choosing a curcumin supplement and what exactly the studies showed."
Is Turmeric different from Curcumin ?
Turmeric powder is ground up extract from the root and stem of the Curcuma Long plant and Curcumin is a key component of that turmeric powder that medical researchers have extensively been studying.
Turmeric only contains about 2-5% curcumin so modern medicine can now extract the curcuminoids from Turmeric and create a concentrated extract containing 95% curcumin. Otherwise, you would have to consume a very large amount of Turmeric to get enough curcumin.
Curcumin Research?
There is a significant amount of research that has been conducted on Turmeric and Curcumin with medical applications that include: anti-inflammatory support, powerful antioxidant properties, heart and circulatory health support, healthy immune support, supporting liver and healthy brain function, digestion issues, and much more.
Curcumin Absorption
Apex Natural representative commented: "Absorption and bioavailability is by far the biggest cause for discussion about Turmeric Curcumin as is isn't absorbed well by the body. Researchers have been testing different ingredients and delivery methods for increasing curcumin absorption especially for medical applications that require high doses like cancer treatment or brain diseases. Much of the research is still evolving and the current bioavailability studies are small or have been performed on rats or in labs to quantify absorption.
Generally, for those looking to use curcumin for everyday health its is suggested that you can naturally increase absorption of curcumin extract by taking it with fatty oils like olive oil or coconut oil.
Otherwise some products mix curcumin with piperine which was shown to help with bioavailability, but piperine can potentially interfere with medications and cause small side effects like stomach irritation. Currently, there is no data for long-term use of piperine. There are a few other specialized curcumin brands but by the most promising curcumin being studied, especially for targeted medical applications like brain function, is from Longvida® which has shown good results.
Is Turmeric Curcumin Safe?
Turmeric is classified by the US FDA as "Generallly Recognized as Safe"(GRAS) and had been ingested by humans for centuries with no major issues. It has been tested in human studies with large dosages with no adverse reactions.
