(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 13, 2013 ) OMAHA, NEB. – Legionnaires' disease is an extreme form of pneumonia that is contracted by inhaling the bacteria through water vapor, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When an individual becomes infected by the disease, the bacterium will invade the lungs and begin replicating itself.
The disease may be contracted when locations such as hospitals, hotels, nursing homes, and other facilities inadequately maintain their water systems, as the disease is caused by a type of bacteria that thrives in stagnant water.
In 2013, there have been multiple cases and outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease throughout the Midwest. Most recently, two individuals contracted the disease at an LA Fitness in a Chicago suburb while using the health clubs facilities. These individuals suffered from illness, while it did not result in any fatalities.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, there were a total of 74 cases of the disease throughout the area by November 2013, an incredible increase from the usual 12 to 14 yearly cases.
In Reynoldsburg, Ohio, an outbreak occurred at a nursing home resulting in 39 illnesses and six deaths during summer 2013. According to the Mayo Clinic staff “Older adults, smokers and people with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease”.
The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control stated “there are anywhere between 8,000 to 18,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease recorded each year across the United States”. These numbers should be reduced following a successful study performed in 2011 which allows for public health resources to manage outbreaks and predict the likely number of cases which will occur.
