There may be fewer elderly residents living in nursing homes than mainstream America imagines. While it is common to think that a person over the age of 75 might be losing physical or mental capacities, the statistics still show that a only small population of seniors actually live in nursing homes. According to Medical News Today only 7.4% of U.S. residents aged 75+ lived in nursing homes during 2005. This is a significantly smaller figure than the 8.1% percent reported in 2000, and the 10.2% reported back in 1990. The National Nursing Home Survey supports this trend, reporting that even among the 85+ age group only 16% of the total lived in nursing homes during 2006, again, dropping from 21% in 1985.
This suggests that among the baby boomer population, seniors are living longer and healthier. When that happens, there is scarcely a need to force the issue. Sandy Markwood of the National Association of Area Agencies on Ageing stated that these trends reflect desire of seniors to age at home or to live more independently in senior communities. "If you can keep people in that 65-to-74 age group out of nursing home facilities it's a significant improvement."
However, one potential problem is a senior's increased risk of falling. The risk itself does not justify full-time nursing home care.
