The Pharmacological Composition Of Holy Basil

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 04, 2014 ) Grass Valley, CA -- The Holy Basil is known as a part of religious beliefs of the Hindu people. It has played a role in the worship of their God Vishnu and his icons. For Hindus, this sacred plant's petals are given to the dying in the hopes of raising their souls to heaven when they finally leave this world. The plant itself has been a symbol of healing and rising up again.

Wylins dug deeper into what makes this plant a wonder and studies showed an exemplary combination of chemical constituents that gave it its healing properties.
Recent researches revealed that it has a high concentration of eugenol. This compound is chemically classified as phenylpropanoids and known for its application in modern-day commercially-made painkillers.

Another substances found are oleanolic acid and rosmarinic acid. Oleanolic acid (also known as oleanic acid), which is usually found in American pokeweed, helps in inhibiting cellular inflammatory activities. On the other hand, rosmarinic acid, a naturally-occurring ester, has derivatives that are known for anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant properties. Plants who possess these two acids had been widely used for hundreds of years already because of their proven medicinal properties, that even indigenous tribes are still using those plants as a way of healing the sick.

In addition to these, the Holy Basil has shown trace amounts of linalool and carvacrol. Linalool, a naturally-occurring alcohol which is known for its application in scented hygiene products, is best used as ingredients for pesticides and mosquito-repellent commodities. Carvacrol, on the other hand, is best known for its ability to inhibit the growth of some strains of bacteria.
Even if the Holy Basil is known for its religious use, it is no longer a surprise why this herb is still a part of natural medication from hundreds of years to its modern applications nowadays. Research of the Holy Basil's capabilities in terms of medicine is still going on, making it one of those plants which have high potential of curing terminal diseases. What may be discovered now about Holy Basil may change the way it will be viewed as medicine in the future.
