Turmeric Research Demonstrates The PlantÂ’s Medicinal Versatility

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 12, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Turmeric is one of the most highly researched plants on the planet and with good reason. Its use in popular dietary supplements and its many properties have made it a promising botanical with a host of potential uses. Thousands of studies have been conducted for the possibilities it holds for addressing conditions ranging from athlete's foot and cancer to mood disorders.

"Turmeric is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory," said VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan. "In clinical studies, it was proven to be as effective as many commonly prescribed anti-inflammatories, but without the side effects that are often associated with prescription medications."

Two of turmeric's properties are the ability to bolster the immune system and neutralize free radicals associated with the aging process. Turmeric doesn't enter the bloodstream like the majority of prescription medications. Studies indicate it works primarily from the intestines where 70 percent of the body's immune defense originates.

One of the most promising studies was conducted to determine if turmeric could protect the vascular system against degradation in patients with diabetes. The disease is known to damage nerves and blood vessels and the harm is worse in individuals that don't have their glucose levels under close control.

Published in the Journal of Neuroscience Research, the study determined that turmeric activates receptors in the body that protects against inflammation of the circulatory system and the effects of oxygen-glucose deprivation. Additionally, the study ascertained that turmeric markedly increased the viability of neurons that transmit information throughout the body and reduced the production of nitric acid, a free radical associated with aging.

The Journal of Affective Disorders published research proving that turmeric influences multiple biological functions, including those associated with major depressive disorder. During the tests, researchers ascertained that benefits from the botanical agent occurred beginning 4 to 8 weeks after treatment in those without suicidal tendencies. Turmeric was also found to reduce oxidation occurring from free radicals and helped the body's immune and anti-inflammatory processes. Neurotransmitter activity was also enhanced.

Multiple studies have demonstrated turmeric's ability to reduce inflammation that occurs with joint disease and dysfunction, and protect the body in others ways. As new research is conducted, turmeric may well hold the key to breakthroughs for an extensive variety of conditions that currently plague mankind.
