(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 01, 2014 ) Deerfield Beach, Florida -- The study of 56 people, published in the Journal Of Affective Disorders, showed that taking curcumin twice daily lead to both a reduction in self-reported depressive symptoms, and also secondary outcomes, measured via the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory scale.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed the subjects for 8 weeks. In the first 4 weeks the group showed improvements in a range of symptoms, and these results became statistically significant compared with a placebo during the second 4 weeks.
Herbal supplement expert Sue Benton from Earthstream Herbs, a manufacturer of turmeric curcumin supplement., comments "we really welcome further research like this on the antidepressant effects of turmeric and curcumin, and if this study is right to suggest that curcumin benefits depression, then it is really exciting news about yet another use for this wonderful spice."
The study showed that subjects with 'atypical depression' did particularly well on the curcumin supplement. Atypical depression is a specific form of major depression which is quite common. It has symptoms such as oversleeping, loss of appetite, increased appetite or weight gain and fatigue.
The researchers believe that the effects are most likely down to the anti-inflammatory effect of the curcumin, also noting that "Curcumin, the principal curcuminoid from the spice turmeric, influences several biological mechanisms associated with major depression, namely those associated with monoaminergic activity, immune-inflammatory and oxidative and nitrosative stress pathways, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, and neuroprogression,"
Cumin and turmeric have been the focus of a large number of recent studies, with over 7000 in the previous year, and the lead researcher Adrian Lopresti, PhD observed that "There is now increasing support for the antidepressant effects of curcumin."
