An Increasing Number Of Eczema Sufferers Use Turmeric For Relief

(Medical-NewsWire.com, December 12, 2014 ) Portland, Oregon -- Turmeric is an ancient medicinal spice that is widely used by consumers for arthritis pain relief. Following recent studies, it has now become popular among those who are suffering from various skin conditions.

An increasing number of eczema sufferers are using turmeric to combat their skin condition. The natural remedy is believed to be effective in providing relief from itching without causing side effects. According to many of these sufferers, turmeric worked better to ease symptoms than medicated creams and lotions.

Many of the therapeutic benefits are thought to be due to curcumin, the active ingredient within the turmeric plant. This ingredient is believed to contain bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties that are thought to reduce the expression of enzymes that cause inflammation in the body.

Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis and although it can develop at childhood, it can also persist during adult life. Following promising results in recent studies, sufferers have started to use turmeric powder and apply it as a mask or paste onto affected areas.

The Journals of Drugs in Dermatology published a study that evaluated the efficacy of turmeric in helping people manage skin conditions. It found that the benefits of turmeric to skin health was due to its antioxidant qualities. There were also studies that found turmeric to be effective in decreasing inflammation, improving skin circulation, and wound healing.

Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Wellness" and a nutritionist, also recommends the use of turmeric as she believes it can significantly help improve inflammatory conditions such as eczema and arthritis.

Due to the increase in the amount of research and studies that were conducted to test the efficacy of curcumin for skin health, more people are also relying on it for eczema treatment. They believe that turmeric is safer and more effective because it does not have chemicals like most lotions and creams do.

"Sufferers normally add turmeric in their food, or make creams or pastes. However, there are also those who prefer to use curcumin supplements," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

Experts recommend curcumin supplements that also contain BioPerine for maximum benefit. These are believed to be more effective than those that do not have the ingredient. BioPerine is a black pepper extract that can increase absorption of nutrients such as curcumin in the body (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
