Research Suggests That Obesity Can Potentially Be A Risk Factor For Developing Rheumatoid Arthritis

(Medical-NewsWire.com, May 13, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Obesity is one of the most prevalent conditions that is affecting millions of people around the globe. What makes it even more alarming is that it not only decreases the quality of life for patients, but it also places them in life-threatening conditions and increases their risk for a variety of diseases.

Research suggests that obesity can potentially be a risk factor for developing rheumatoid arthritis. There are many risk factors identified for the development of rheumatoid arthritis, such as smoking and obesity.

"Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes swelling, pain and potential deformity in affected joint areas. It is believed that obesity can increase RA risk by 20 percent," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Arthritis Care Research journal published a study online, which was co-authored by Eric Matteson, M.D. The study examined the connection between RA and obesity. Dr. Matteson, who is also the chair of Mayo Clinic's division of rheumatology, stated that obesity being considered as a risk factor for the development of rheumatoid arthritis is really something new, since it has always been smoking that's associated with the condition.

It is not yet known what causes RA. However, it is believed that certain factors contribute to its development, such as a genetic predisposition combined with smoking, occupational exposure, previous infection and other environmental factors. Weight gain, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the results of RA diagnosis, and this is because patients tend to become less physically active and they take certain medications.

According to Dr. Matteson, a study found that obesity is considered as a more modest risk factor than smoking. However, it doesn't change the fact that it is still a risk factor. Smoking can double one's risk for arthritis, but obesity adds to that risk by 20 percent.

Rheumatologists have always stressed the importance of weight loss to their patients. Carrying excess weight significantly contributes to joint damage and it also reduces function. Weight loss is recommended for the entire population, as obesity doesn't only increase RA risk, but also other conditions such as heart disease.

Obesity and smoking are two things that people should avoid to reduce their risk for rheumatoid arthritis. There are many other things that can be done to improve one's protection against arthritic conditions.

Taking natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements can significantly help provide more protection to the joint cartilage. Glucosamine is even used by many arthritis sufferers in fighting pain and other discomforts (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
