The Arthritis Foundation Has Provided Details About Why RA Patients Should Quit Smoking

(Medical-NewsWire.com, June 05, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Smoking is one of the most difficult vices to eliminate and this is true even for individuals who are suffering from certain medical conditions. Individuals with arthritis are also advised to improve their diet and habits and quit smoking.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided details about why RA patients should quit smoking. According to experts, smoking can significantly reduce the efficacy of treatments for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

"Smoking has always been known to be a risk factor for the development of RA. Now, research is saying that it also makes treatments less effective," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The Arthritis & Rheumatism journal published a study that found those who smoke are 50 percent less likely to respond to medications in the early phase of rheumatoid arthritis than non-smokers. According to the rheumatology fellow at the Karolinsk University Hospital and lead author of the study, Saedis Saevarsdottir, smoking is a modifiable lifestyle habit and it can be included as a part of RA care.

Swedish researchers conducted a study that involved over 1,430 patients of rheumatoid arthritis. There were 873 patients who received methotrexate and 535 who took anti-TNFs. After three months, it was found that 27 percent of smokers who took methotrexate responded to the treatment better than the 36 percent from the non-smokers. On the other hand, 29 percent of the smokers who took TNF inhibitors responded better than the 43 percent of non-smokers.

"The study also found that individuals who used to smoke responded to the treatment just as well as those who never smoked. Experts recommend that patients stop the habit to get the therapeutic benefits of medications," added O'Sullivan.

Healthcare professionals and experts have always recommended that individuals who suffer from arthritic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, should not only practice healthy eating habits but also improve their lifestyle. This means reducing consumption or use of alcohol and tobacco as well as having a good sleep on a daily basis.

Practicing regular exercise is also one of the most recommended activities for arthritis patients. There are also anti-inflammatory food items that experts recommend for those who are suffering from arthritis. These anti-inflammatory food items are typically plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Many arthritis sufferers also use natural alternatives such as curcumin, which is a key ingredient of the medicinal spice known as turmeric. Curcumin is popularized by the powerful anti-inflammatory properties it contains. It also has other therapeutic properties such as antioxidants (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
