A Study Investigates The Link Between Body Weight And Joint Replacement

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 06, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Obesity is one of the epidemics that is placing the life of many people in jeopardy. Excess weight is associated with the development of a wide variety of diseases. However, it is not only linked to the occurrence of medical conditions, but also the increased risk of undergoing a procedure.

A study investigates the link between body weight and joint replacement. According to researchers, being obese or overweight triples the risk of osteoarthritis patients undergoing knee and hip replacements, versus those who have a normal weight.

"There are many osteoarthritis patients nowadays, and there are quite a number of them who are striving to become physically active and fit," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The researchers from Monash University in Australia followed around 39,000 healthy volunteers for 15 years. They found that the increase in BMI, or body mass index, waist circumference and weight were linked with a higher risk of joint replacements. The authors of the study also believe that additional weight places stress on the joints and triggers the release of inflammatory proteins. The proteins released into the blood by fatty tissues may potentially contribute to the destruction of cartilage.

In the study, the participants were divided into four groups according to their weight. It was found that women who weighed the minimum of 160 pounds, and men who weighed at least 214 pounds were 3.4 times more likely to get a knee or hip replacement 15 years after entering the study.

Dr. Flava Cicuttini, Monash Univesity's physician in the departments of epidemiology and preventive medicine, says that the findings have implications for weight loss techniques among osteoarthritis sufferers. He also added that losing weight alone may not be sufficient, as patients should also reduce total fat mass and waist fat.

According to the director of the John Hopkins Weight Management Center, Lawrence Cheskin, M.D., the finding of the report, which demonstrated the link between joint replacements and higher BMI, is not groundbreaking. However, he was also intrigued by the study's finding that the waist circumference was linked to an increase in joint replacements.

Researchers also added that they anticipate an increased demand for joint replacement in the future, and this is due to the global obesity epidemic. This, according to Dr. Cheskin, is an excellent reminder of the benefits of weight management. Practicing regular exercise as well as having a healthy diet are among the secrets of maintaining a healthy weight.

There are several ways to avoid joint replacement. In addition to weight management, there are also arthritis patients who use a natural alternative called glucosamine. Glucosamine supplements are believed to be helpful for reducing pain and regaining the quality of life for sufferers (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
