Revealing Industry Bad Practices

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 06, 2015 ) Largo, Florida -- Probiotic supplements are increasingly getting attention for their helpful effects on a range of health issues, but their benefits may remain out of reach for those with gluten intolerance.

According to a 2015 study carried out at Columbia University Medical Center, up to 50 percent of all probiotic supplements contain gluten, including some formulas advertised as "gluten free."

In the study, researchers analyzed the contents of 22 popular probiotic supplements using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. 12 of the tested formulas were found to contain traces of gluten. Eight supplements contained gluten at a level of less than 20 parts per million, making them technically "gluten-free", according to the guidelines of the US Food and Drug Administration. However, another four supplements contained gluten exceeding the USDA threshold for "gluten-free" products. Of these four formulas, two were falsely labeled by the manufacturer as "gluten-free."
According to the lead author of the study, Dr. Samantha Nazareth, the findings are particularly worrisome for individuals with celiac disease. Celiac disease is not an allergy, but a disorder of the autoimmune system.

Individuals with the disease are typically unable to consume even trace elements of gluten for the entirety of their lives. As little as two-thousandths of a teaspoon of gluten can trigger negative symptoms in an individual with celiac disease.

The trace quantities of gluten found in the probiotic supplements are, according to researcher Dr. Benjamin Lebwohl, unlikely to cause serious effects. However, if individuals with celiac disease regularly take the supplements, they may suffer ill health effects.

While the report calls into question current labeling standards within the supplement industry, a handful of supplement companies stand by their commitment to researching and manufacturing truly gluten-free products. Chantilly Health, a producer and distributor of enzyme and probiotic supplements, is among a handful of manufacturers to offer probiotic products that are completely free of gluten. According to Chantilly Health representatives, many of the supplements' primary users have digestive complaints. Therefore, it is a company priority to create their products according to the needs of those with gluten intolerance and other allergies.

When purchasing probiotics and other supplements, the consumer's best course of action is still to read labels carefully. It remains to be seen whether the findings will lead to further investigation or prompt increased quality control from the USDA and other regulatory bodies.
