Miami-Dade County Passes Ordinance Making Minor Marijuana Possession Civil Offence

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 08, 2015 ) Miami, FL -- According to Tampa Bay, Miami-Dade officials granted an ordinance on Tuesday which gives law enforcement officials more room to be lenient when confronting people making marijuana infractions. Those found with 20 grams of marijuana may now be given a civil infraction (no criminal record attached) and an $100 fine. Those caught with more than 20 grams are not eligible to receive the lessened sentence. The new ordinance does not necessarily grant offenders a rite of passage, as police officers may choose to book offenders. The ordinance was passed in the hopes of reducing the number of people admitted into the justice system based off of minor marijuana infractions. According to Tampa Bay ten percent of all cases in the Miami-Dade justice system are ascribed to marijuana offences. Miami Drug Rehab supports the expansion of law enforcement punishment, and suggests making treatment a factor in law enforcement response.

Miami Drug Rehab is a drug treatment facility in Miami treating clients with drug and alcohol use disorders from all over the state of Florida. An associate specializing in addiction treatment in Miami comments,

"There are some who believe the new ordinance will prompt users to become emboldened to use marijuana openly, but in fact those with cannabis use disorders will have the option to seek treatment outside of the criminal justice system. The hindrance of having a criminal record is what bars those who are recovered addicts from progressing in the professional careers, and placing themselves in good neighborhoods.

"As professionals who work with recovering addicts daily, implementing a treatment option for offenders, even if it's marijuana, will help eliminate recidivism rates."
