(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 08, 2015 ) Baltimore, MD -- Close to two dozen liquor stores were damaged during the Baltimore riots following the death of Freddie Gray in late-April have been denied city recovery aid, says Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake. According to Blake, unless the damaged liquor stores move to another location or start selling healthier products, there will be no aid.
According to reports from the Baltimore Sun, the city's decision to deny the 23 store's recovery aid was based on their noncompliance with a zoning ban which had been placed on alcohol. Mayor Blake has urged those stores which had been denied aid to rethink their sales identity. "I have a great amount of sympathy for those stores that have been damaged, and we want them to rebuild. We want them to reopen. But with all the grants and the loan programs that we have available we have a unique opportunity for these nonconforming liquor stores to convert into uses that can uplift our community," said Blake.
Of the 40 liquor store which had been damaged as a result of the riots, the 23 which had been denied recovery aid were located in residential areas where the sale of alcohol was prohibited. According to reports, the damaged liquor stores in commercial areas will receive city recovery aid, however the ones in residential area are not being assisted.
Baltimore's City Councilwoman Sharon Green Middleton agrees with Mayor Blake that these stores shouldn't be reestablished in residential areas. "Crime and grime is around liquor stores," Middleton said. "So if they're not going to work with the community, and change, they need to go."

I can respect the business owners of these establishments so I do not want them to lose business, therefore I too encourage them to change their identity. It will be a win-win for all."
