A Tennessee Group Is Making Effort To Raise Awareness of Legal Substance Harm During Pregnancy

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 08, 2015 ) Nashville, TN -- In spite of pain pill prescribed by doctors, wine and cigarettes being legal, they could each cause harm to a pregnant mother's unborn child. The effects ranging short term to long term can include behavioral and learning problems, withdrawal syndrome, and physical defects. Some of the effects that legal substances can cause are capable of having an adverse impact over the remainder of the child's lifetime.

A group comprised of medical and government professionals from Tennessee has joined forces to assist women in their childbearing years to understand the harmful consequences associated with alcohol, nicotine, and prescription drugs. According to Tennessee Department of Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner, the state is challenged with helping people understand that just because a substance is legal doesn't make it safe for pregnant women and some legally obtained substances can do as much harm as illegal ones.

"Women who must take medications to treat health conditions during pregnancy should have a conversation with their healthcare providers about balancing risks and benefits of all drugs and discussing which are safest," Dreyzehner said.

According to Dreyzehner and Stephen Patrick, MD, MPH of Vanderbilt University, more people understand the need for joint efforts to help prevent childbearing women from using alcohol, nicotine, and other substances, as a result of Tennessee starting a controlled substance monitoring database in 2012 to address the misuse of prescription medications. Since January work has been done to establish a statewide consortium of health, medical science, government and community leaders to increase awareness and decrease health damage caused by legal substances.

The group meetings started out small beginning in February, however additional groups have joined the effort and the participating organizations includes seven departments and divisions of state government. And beyond the small group meetings, Tennessee Department of Health Members are conducting chronic pain guidelines seminars statewide for medical students and practicing clinicians.

A medical associate from Drug Rehab Nashville comments "due to certain substances being deemed legal it can be quite challenging for certain groups of people to understand why certain legal substances may not be good for them. I think it is especially important that we raise awareness to help pregnant mothers to avoid certain legal substances because their use of these substances doesn't just harm them, it harms their unborn child. Unfortunately, these unborn children have no control over what kinds of substances they come in contact with while their mother is carrying them. therefore it isn't fear to make these children suffer from the poor choices made by their mother."
