Bill to Prohibit The Sale and Delivery of Palcohol in New Jersey Awaits Gov. Christie's Signature

(Medical-NewsWire.com, July 10, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- Despite the powdered alcohol product looking virtually harmless, state officials believe the product could induce great harm. Palcohol, a powdered alcoholic beverage comes in powder form and contains the alcohol content of a standard mixed drink. The powder, ethyl alcohol, has been designed with the intentions to be dissolved into liquid to produce alcoholic beverages.

The drug can cause great harm due to it being able to be snorted and it can also create a choking hazard. It can also be abused by adding too much powder or mixing the product with other drugs to create a dangerous high, says state lawmakers.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the bill is currently awaiting the signature of Governor Christie. If the bill is approved legislation would prohibit the sale, delivery, or purchase of powdered alcohol in the state of New Jersey. Thus far the bill has passed Senate by 39-1 and the Assembly by 69-5, according to reports.

Concerns in regards to the sale of alcohol grew in March after the U.S, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the sale of Palcohol. Currently, seven states have banned the sale of Palcohol, and 39 others are considering a ban according to an earlier testimony in the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee.

Officials are also concerned with the dangers Palcohol could impose on underage drinkers. Lawmakers suggest that the colorful packing on the Palcohol will attract young children to pen the package and consume it. It has also of concern that the mixing of numerous powdered substances into one drink could induce a serious a hazard.

A medical associate from Drug Rehab Philadelphia comments "I believe the entire tri-state area should place a ban on powdered alcohol. Many Philadelphia residents do go across the bridge to purchase alcohol in New Jersey, so if it's banned in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, it would allow us to keep this dangerous product out of the tri-state area. It will take a team effort to help end substance abuse and addiction in the tri-state area. Our alcohol rehab in Philadelphia, PA has worked collectively with organizations all over the tri state to help raise awareness on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. I am hopeful that the tri-state area will continue to work together and try to stay on one accord in the fight against substance abuse."
