Nutriden Study Suggests Omega 3 May Reduce Anti-Social Behaviours

(Medical-NewsWire.com, August 10, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A new study, which is a continuation of research begun by Adrian Raine of the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that Omega 3 fatty acids may have long-term neurodevelopmental effects that ultimately reduce antisocial and aggressive behaviour in children.

The first study researched the development of children who had participated in an enrichment program - one that gave the children additional cognitive stimulation, physical exercise, and nutritional enrichment - as three year-olds, as well as the development of children who did not participate. The nutritional enrichment included adding Omega 3s to their diet.

The results were startling! At 11 years, the children in the enrichment program showed a marked improvement in brain function as measured by EEG, as compared to those children who didn't participate. At age 23, they showed a 34 percent reduction in criminal behaviour. The authors took a good look at the nutritional aspect of this research and realized that omega-3 has been shown to be critical to brain development and function.

"Omega-3 regulates neurotransmitters, enhances the life of a neuron, and increases dendritic branching, but our bodies do not produce it. We can only get it from the environment," Raine said.

The new study, which is considered a continuation of the first study, featured a randomized controlled trial where 100 children, between the ages of eight and 16, received regular omega 3 supplements in the form of a juice drink for six months. Another 100 children received the same drink without the supplement.

After six months, both groups saw a drop in anti-social behaviour as witnessed and recorded through surveying the parents of the children. Study author Raine explained this as the placebo effect. But the results were different at 12-months.

"But what was particularly interesting was what was happening at 12 months," Raine said. "The control group returned to the baseline while the omega-3 group continued to go down. In the end, we saw a 42 percent reduction in scores on externalizing behavior and 62 percent reduction in internalizing behaviour."

Nutriden is happy to point out that the evidence is piling up: Omega 3's are showing more and more positives for our society.
