Research Reveals The Role Black Pepper Plays As Bioavailability Enhancer For Turmeric

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 02, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Natural alternatives such as turmeric have long been a part of the diet of many people. They are believed to offer therapeutic benefits without causing side effects as pharmaceutical drugs do. The use of turmeric is associated with a myriad of benefits, but because it has low bioavailability, experts recommend that it be used with another ingredient that can boost its absorption inside the body.

In May 1998, groundbreaking research revealed the role black pepper played as a bioavailability enhancing property for turmeric. The study, published in the journal Planta Medica, evaluated the effect of piperine on both rats and humans. Piperine, an extract of black pepper, was shown to have the ability to increase the bioavailability of curcumin by 2000%, and thus increase its absorption inside the body.

"Today, some of the best turmeric supplements contain a combination of curcumin and black pepper extract," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.

The therapeutic benefits offered by turmeric are believed to come from its powerful phytochemical, curcumin. Curcumin is thought to contain healing properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory benefits, among others. Since turmeric has low bioavailability, only small amounts of these healing properties are absorbed inside the body.

It is believed that 5 percent of black pepper is comprised of piperine, a compound that is considered to be a potent inhibitor of drug metabolism. The liver eliminates substances from the body by making them water soluble, and with this they are easily excreted. When for instance an individual takes curcumin, high amounts of its therapeutic properties are bound to be eliminated from the body. Black pepper works by inhibiting this process.

According to the 1998 study, the combination of black pepper and curcumin makes an ideal natural alternative for people who want to take advantage of the medicinal spice's healing effects. When one uses turmeric powder in meals or beverages, they experience a small spike in the levels in the blood stream. However, when combined with black pepper, the amounts of curcumin in the body skyrocket.

Curcumin is a widely researched polyphenol, and its combination with black pepper has also caught the interest of many scientists. A more recent study published in the Neurochemical Research journal in August 2015 supports the findings, concluding that piperine significantly enhanced the protective effects of curcumin in an animal study.

BioPerine is a patented black pepper extract that is commonly used in health supplements. Curcumin supplements with BioPerine are believed to be more effective because they allow the curcumin to be absorbed by the body more easily. Individuals who suffer from arthritis even reported that with the use of curcumin and BioPerine, they were able to achieve significant pain relief and improved mobility (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
