Darvocet, Darvon Suicide VictimsÂ’ Families May Have Legal Recourse

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 16, 2010 ) New York, NY – Propoxyphene, the active ingredient in Darvon and Darvocet, has been linked to an increased risk of fatal overdose, both intentional and accidental. The FDA highlighted the propoxyphene suicide risk with a 2009 black box warning, the agency’s strongest advisory; however, the FDA did not request a Darvon and Darvocet recall until November 2010 when a study surfaced linking the drug to an increased risk of abnormal heart rhythms. If a loved one has committed suicide using propoxyphene, you may have legal recourse due to the manufacturer’s failure to to warn of the Darvocet and Darvon suicide risk. Visit http://www.classaction.org/darvon-and-darvocet.html and complete the Free Case Evaluation form to find out if you can recover compensation for your losses.

There have been many reports of propoxyphene suicides and accidental overdoses, occurring either alone or with alcohol. The FDA has received more than 3000 reports of serious Darvon and Darvocet side effects, many of which involved overdose or suicide. Additionally, a government database report on emergency room visits indicated that in, 2007 alone, there were 503 deaths attributed to Darvon. During the previous year, the database reported more than 446 Darvon-related deaths. At least 20% of the deaths were attributed to Darvon suicide, and because the report only covered one-third of the population, the actual number of Darvocet and Darvon-related deaths may be much higher.

In Europe, research has found that propoxyphene may be more lethal in overdoses than other pain killers. It has been reported that deaths due to Darvon-related suicides and accidental overdoses can occur quickly, possibly within the first hour. Many of the deaths due to Darvon or Darvocet suicides have occurred in individuals with emotional problems, or in those taking sedatives simultaneously.
