If the mesothelioma has become malignant, or has spread to other parts of the body, symptoms may include: pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling in the neck or face.
Those who are at highest risk are individuals who work in construction and have inhaled asbestos fibers or dust after it has been tampered with. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of a family member who has been exposed to asbestos can put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, there is no link between smoking and mesothelioma, but smoking does increase the likelihood of a person developing mesothelioma.
