British Chemist Receives Compensation from Mesothelioma Lawsuit

YORK, UNITED KINGDOM- (EMAILWIRE.COM, January 15, 2011) LegalView, a leading online legal resource, is happy to report that Jim Sellwood, a Chemistry lecturer who died at the age of 73 from exposure to asbestos, will be receiving compensation. Asbestos exposure can occur when the fibers are inhaled or ingested and become lodged in human tissue, causing inflammation or infection.

Sellwood was a professor at York St. John University in the United Kingdom and used the widely popular textbook, Chemistry: Collected Experiments, which encouraged the use of asbestos mats in the classroom. Sellwood's widow sued the publisher of the book and she won.

For many years, if a Chemist needed to pick up a hot or flammable material, they would use a stove mat which contained asbestos. Many people used these same mats in their kitchens while cooking as well.

Sellwood died of mesothelioma, the deadly lung cancer which has been shown to be caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos also causes other serious health problems. Even though many medical experts knew about the dangers of asbestos for many years, manufacturers of asbestos failed to warn the public about its dangerous effects on individualsÂ’ health.

Mesothelioma cancer is the most deadly form of cancer. It affects the lining of the lungs, and in rare cases, the lining of the heart or of the abdominal cavity. In the United States alone, approximately, 2,000 to 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma a year. Also, the disease can take up to 30 years for it to fully manifest.

Mesothelioma symptoms include: shortness of breath, pain on one side of the chest, the back or the abdomen, often with swelling, a persistent cough, or unexplained weight loss. Since the disease takes so long to manifest, physicians often misdiagnose the disease as pneumonia during its early stages. There are five types of mesothelioma and four out of these five types are malignant, meaning that the cancer can spread to other organs in the body. Treatment options include: radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery, or a combination. In recent studies a combination of therapies has shown to greatly improve the life expectancy of patients.

Many seek a lawyer; mesothelioma is the most deadly form of cancer and is terminal, meaning there is no cure for the disease. The life-expectancy of those who have been diagnosed is about one year.
