(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 27, 2011 ) FLOWER MOUND, TX - While we are all told from an early age how important it is to brush our teeth, most of us do it improperly, says Dr. Jonathan Golab, a Flower Mound smile makeover dentist.
"Everybody brushes their teeth, but few do it correctly," Golab says. "With a focus on key brushing methods, overall oral health improvements can be seen."
Usual mistakes made in brushing include brushing teeth too harshly or too quickly, says the Flower Mound dental implants provider. "On average, people spend less time brushing than is recommended," Golab says. "Teeth should should always be brushed at least two minutes.
"Some may think this is difficult initially, " says Flower Mound dentistry provider Dr.Golab, "but focusing on two or three teeth at a time makes it very doable." Golab (http://www.drgolab.net/sep/flower-mound-tx-services-4.htm) recommends a systematic approach, such as brushing teeth in the same order every time. "It helps some people to time themselves initially," he says. "Later, you can brush more efficiently without a timer."
It is important to use the proper angle, too, he says. Start by holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, just where teeth meet the gums. Maintain this angle as while gently brushing the outer and inner tooth surfaces, two or three at a time. The technique is effective in removing plaque and bacteria, he says. A vibrating, tight, circular motion is best.
The inner surfaces of the front teeth are best approached differently, says the Flower Mound cosmetic dentistry provider. Tilt the brush behind the teeth, and use short, vertical strokes. Only the front half of the brush is used at this stage. The chewing surfaces of teeth are best approached straight on, with brush bristles flush to teeth. A back and forth motion is advised, like gentle scrubbing. Afterward, always brush the tongue.
Toothbrush type matters, too. "Choose a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles to provide gentle contact," he says. "Select one comfortable to hold, that has a head small enough to easily reach each tooth."
