New Clinical Trials May Bring Hope for a Mesothelioma Cure

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 02, 2011 ) WASHINGTON, D.C. -LegalView, a leading online legal resource, is pleased to announce that clinical trials for mesothelioma are making headway for finding a cure.

For example, a recent study that investigated whether Stage II mesothelioma patients would benefit from a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy found that patients improved from this combination as opposed to a control group. While there is no known cure for mesothelioma, surgery can remove early localized tumors and there are other treatments that can extend a patient's life.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. When inhaled, the fibers can affect the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. Mesothelioma has a very low survival rate, and the disease is usually not discovered until 30 years after exposure. Often times, after diagnoses, it is too late for effective treatment.

Exposure to asbestos not only has been shown to cause mesothelioma, but it has been shown to cause other health problems.

Additionally, because the disease takes so many years for it to manifest, physicians have trouble diagnosing it during its early stages. The disease is often misdiagnosed as pneumonia or other health problems long before the initial diagnosis of mesothelioma occurs.

A clinical trial typically has three stages. The first stage is conducted with a small group of participants to determine the correct dosage and safety of the drug. Phase two enrolls more people and is used to determine the effectiveness of the drug against the illness, and phase three determines whether the drug can be used to effectively treat the disease. This final stage also determines whether the drug is more effective than the existing drug.

Before a trial begins, patients undergo a pre-clinical trial screening. In this screening, the trial coordinator determines whether patients meet the requirements of the trial. Some trials require patients who have not undergone any treatment while others require patients that have not been responding to treatment. This is done in order to determine whether or not certain treatments are effective against a particular disease.

Manufacturers of asbestos knew about its dangerous affects long before the general public did, so many mesothelioma patients seek advice from a mesothelioma law firm. LegalView is a consortium of four mesothelioma law firms representing several mesothelioma lawyers.

Not only does LegalView offer information about mesothelioma related issues, but LegalView also provides free case consultations about brain injuries.
