LegalView Announces Gabrielle Giffords' Movement to Full Rehab

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 03, 2011 ) HOUSTON- LegalView, a leading on-line legal resource, has updated its brain injury portal regarding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' recovery.

The Democrat representative from Arizona was shot on Jan. 8 at an event near Tucson. It is believed that the shooting was an assignation attempt on her. Giffords was critically injured and suffered brain trauma by a gunshot to the head. The gunman killed six and injured 13 people at a supermarket where Giffords was speaking to constituents.

However, according to her physicians, her prognosis looks favorable, and last week her doctors her doctors said that she could begin full rehab. That same week, she was moved from intensive care for the first time in two weeks since being shot.

After being moved to TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital last Wednesday, she immediately began therapy that could last several months. Traumatic brain injury rehab is a painstaking process for those who have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), as it can take months- even years- to re-learn simple tasks that many of us take for granted such as walking, speaking or reading.

Traumatic brain injuries that are caused by bullets cause damage to the tissue directly and indirect damage caused by shockwaves from the bullet to the entire brain. The bullet hit Giffords' left hemisphere, which controls language; it is uncertain how her recovery will go. Traumatic brain injuries are often unpredictable and have long recovery periods.

Jared Loughner, the 22-year-old man accused of the shooting, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of trying to assassinate a federal employee and faces other federal murder charges.

Last Wednesday, Giffords' status was upgraded from serious to good. Her doctors also say that she is recovering at lightning speed. However, she has a long-road of recovery ahead of her as many traumatic brain injury patients do.

Over 1.4 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury every year, and of those, 50,000 die and over 200,000 need hospitalization or brain injury treatment. Many experience altered or loss of functional ability.

Since the emotional and physical ramifications of a traumatic brain injury can be so difficult and because many suffer a TBI through no fault of their own- like Giffords- many seek legal advice from brain injury lawyers. LegalView is an on-line legal resource for TBI patients and their families. LegalView is a consortium of four law firms, including some brain injury law firms. LegalView also offers information about how to find a possible car accident lawyer.
