LegalView Updates Its Brain Injury Portal Regarding Potential Hazard to Infants

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 14, 2011 ) AUSTRALIA- LegalView, a leading online legal resource, has updated its brain injury portal.

Napthalene, the primary chemical ingredient of mothballs, has been linked to brain injuries in babies. Experts in Australia are recommending that officials ban the chemical after one baby died and two others suffered brain injuries.

The chemical is already banned in the European Union. According to pediatricians, the chemical breaksdown red blood cells in about five percent of children with Asian, African, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean descent. These children have have an enzyme that protects them against malaria, but puts them at higher risk for a condition called kernicterus.

Other causes of traumatic brain injuries include: gun shots, falls and car accidents. It is estimated that over 1.4 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Of those, 200,000 need hospitalization or traumatic brain injury rehabilitation and 50,000 die every year. Of those that need hospitalization or treatment, many experience altered or lost functional ability.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 5.3 people in the United States suffering a TBI will have long-term effects.

Brain injury treatment is a painstakingly long process where patients re-learn how to do simple tasks such as walking, speaking or writing. Sometimes it can take patients years to re-learn how to do these tasks. Additionally, physicians may perform brain surgery in order to correct damaged tissue, or reduce bleeding or swelling. Also, a social worker is usually involved when someone experiences a traumatic brain injury. This person can help the family understand what has occurred and help them make the necessary changes to their daily routine to accommodate the patient. The social worker can also assist the patient and the family when the patient is moved to rehabilitation.

The financial, emotional and physical hardships of suffering a traumatic brain injury can be difficult for the patient and his or her family. Furthermore, many individuals and their families do not have the financial resources available to make normal life possible again. For this reason (among others), many patients and their families seek legal counsel from a brain injury lawyer. LegalView is an online legal resource for individuals and their families which provides information about finding a possible brain injury lawyer.

LegalView also offers factual information, stories, and general legal information related to traumatic brain injuries. If you or a loved one has suffered a TBI, please visit LegalView at www.legalview.info.
