LegalView Announces Crib Recall

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 01, 2011 ) BETHESDA, MD- A baby's crib is one of the few places a parent can place their child and feel confident that their child will be safe. It is the central part of most nurseries. However, an average of 28 babies suffer crib-related injuries every day, says a new study in the journal Pediatrics.

Dr. Gary A. Smith, lead author of the study and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital, was shocked by the number of injuries. He says that he did not expect to find 9,500 children a year go to emergency rooms with crib-related injuries.

Using data collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, Smith and his colleagues found that from 1990 to 2008, there were more than 181,000 children under the age of two taken to emergency rooms related to at least one of the following nursery products: cribs, bassinets and playpens. The most common cause of crib-related injuries was falls and 83 percent of the total injuries suffered came from cribs.

Smith explained that children are top-heavy, so when they learn over a crib, they will fall out.

This news comes after several crib recall. Since 2007, more than 11 million cribs, bassinets and playpens have been recalled. There have been several renovations to make these products safer, but there are still recalls. Recently, the CPSC (Consumer Product and Safety Commission) announced voluntary bassinet recalls; crib are not the only products that are still being recalled. The United States CPSC is an agency that is responsible for insuring consumer products do not pose a risk to public health.

While the study did indicate a significant decrease in the rate of crib-related child injury over the 19-year study period, Smith and the CPSC say more can be done to make cribs and other sleep areas safer for young children.

In a written statement to CNN, the CPSC said it would continue to address the issues raised by the study's authors. Also, the organization will use the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and its Safe Sleep team to establish new and improved safety standards for cribs and bassinets. Additionally, it said that the organization would recall any products deemed unsafe to children.
