(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 31, 2006 ) AMSTERDAM - There is a clear correlation between the daily weather-situation and the number and types of crimes that are taking place, according to a Dutch study executed by the nation's most popular crime site Misdaadkaart.nl. Most striking conclusion: the windier it gets outside, the more burglaries are taking place inside. Misdaadkaart.nl collects and edits all the reported crimes in the Netherlands, and makes them visible by plotting these on maps. More than 50,000 crimes have been compared with the daily weather situation in the country. After extensive analyses, it shows that crime types like "burglaries", "public drunkenness", and "violence" are obviously influenced by the weather.Robert Jan de Heer, founder of Misdaadkaart.nl and responsible for the research, identifies any remarkable correlations. "The analysis shows, that temperature is related to the number of crimes. The colder it gets, the more burglaries are taken place." The difference between the number of burglaries on a hot day (25-29 degrees Celsius) and on a cold day (0-4 degrees Celsius) is almost 50%. A similar comparison can be made for the amount of rain and wind; more rain and wind means more burglaries (more wind: 25% more burglaries, more rain: 30% more).Violence takes mainly place when the weather is sunny and hot. The more clouds there are, the less violence takes place. Public drunkenness takes mainly place at cold weather (25% more compared to hot temperatures) and/or at a high air pressure. Robert Jan de Heer: "Finally, it is striking that the number of road accidents are rising with over 15% when the sun is shining brightly."About the studyAll results can be found on www.misdaadkaart.nl/weer (Dutch only). The research took place amongst 50.000 crimes which took place during 285 days. The data has been compared with the nations official weather provider KNMI "Daggegevens van het weer" (via http://www.knmi.nl/klimatologie/daggegevens). The last coupe of years, a few academic researches have been taken place on the correlation between climates and crimes. More info on that topic can be found (in English) on: http://www.misdaadkaart.nl/media/onderzoek.pdf About Misdaadkaart.nlMisdaadkaart.nl was launched in May this year and attracts appr. 100,000 visitors each month, who are generating over half a million pageviews.
