Topamax Birth Defect Risk Announced by FDA

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 21, 2011 ) New York, NY – The Topamax birth defects attorneys working with Class Action.org are alerting consumers to a March FDA announcement regarding the increased risk of oral clefts in children born to mothers taking Topamax while pregnant. According to the Topamax birth defects announcement, new data revealed that 1.4% of infants exposed to the drug or its generic topiramate while in the womb developed oral clefts, compared to only .38 to .55% of infants exposed to other anti-epileptic drugs. To learn more about the Topamax birth defects risk and to receive a free evaluation of your claim, visit http://www.classaction.org/topamax.html.

According to the FDA, Topamax birth defects may include cleft lips and cleft palates, which develop when parts of the lip or palate do not fuse together properly. Topamax clefts can range from a small notch in the lip to a split which extends into the nose and palate. In addition to cosmetic problems, Topamax birth defects can also interfere with eating and speaking. Depending on the extent of the Topamax cleft lip or palate, one or more surgeries may be required.

Due to the risk of Topamax birth defects, the FDA will strengthen the warning on the epilepsy and migraine medication. Topamax was originally classified under Pregnancy Category C; this means that animal studies indicated a potential risk to a fetus, but adequate human research was not yet available. Due to the Topamax birth defects risk, however, the drug will now be reclassified. Topamax is now found under Pregnancy Category D, indicating that there is positive evidence of risk to a human fetus based on human studies; however, the drug may still be prescribed to pregnant women in some cases, should its benefits outweigh its risks.

Women who delivered children with Topamax birth defects after taking the drug during pregnancy may have legal recourse. Potentially, a Topamax lawsuit would seek compensation for medical bills and other damages resulting from the childÂ’s Topamax cleft lip or cleft palate.
