(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 04, 2011 ) St. Paul, Minnesota -- Dr. Scott Lingle recently defined HIV/AIDS risk at the Aliveness Project.
The Aliveness Project is a non-profit organization supporting people that are living with HIV/AIDS. The Project was formed in 1985 in South Minneapolis, and currently has over 1,500 members from all over Minnesota. Their mission is to encourage self-empowerment and provide direct services for persons living with HIV/AIDS. These services range from informal pone-on-one discussions between patients living with the disease, eating a hot meal, receiving a massage, picking picking up food shelf groceries, attending an educational session, or talking with a case manager.
Every month, the Aliveness Project sponsors an evening educational program. This month, Dr. Lingle spoke on general dental care and implant restorations. He also addressed specific problems that AIDS patients may deal with such as xerstomia (dry mouth) and oral candidiasis (mouth fungal infections). Following the presentation, there was an active question and answer session that was billed as “Ask the Dentist”. The wide range of questions covered all aspects of dental and restorative care, as well as some of the history of treating patients with HIV/AIDS. In the past, these patients were often afraid to visit the dentist, and some dentists were afraid to treat these patients. Now, with better facts and understanding, all patients can be seen in the dental office with total comfort and safety for everyone involved.
