(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 09, 2012 ) Washington, DC -- A study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse concerning the brainÂ’s reward mechanism suggests potential problems for teens who canÂ’t delay gratification.
Although this particular study did not focus on drug use specifically, it gives a glimpse into the possible correlation of delayed gratification and substance abuse. Three hundred seventy-two 12-year-old twins were recruited for the survey and were given two choices: after taking a series of assessments, they could choose $7 immediately or $10 if they waited one week. Those who made the $7 choice were significantly more likely to report having used drugs in the past year.
“The need for instant gratification has always been an important piece of the addiction puzzle,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Although this study doesn’t necessarily give concrete answers to the relationship between those who choose immediate rewards and addiction, it reinforces studies that were done previously which do show a direct correlation between instant gratification and the propensity to use drugs. If parents and educators reinforce the importance of making good decisions, as well as helping develop the internal mechanism for rewarding behavior, addiction treatment for some teens and young adults may be avoided altogether.”
