DePuy created a reimbursement process after issuing a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System in August 2010. The recall was announced after data revealed that the hip implants failed at a higher-than-expected rate. According to the data, approximately 12% of patients with the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients with the ASR total hip replacement needed revision surgery within five years of implantation. In addition to hip failure, pain, swelling and dislocation, the recalled ASR hips have also reportedly been linked to metal poisoning which may occur when the implants’ metal-on-metal components grind against each other releasing cobalt and chromium ions into the body.
