Evo Recording Artists Karate High School Win Ernie Ball Contest

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 24, 2006 ) San Francisco, CA - After performing on the Ernie Ball Stage at the San Francisco Warped Tour on Saturday, July 8th and competing against numerous other bands on the tour, the popular Arcade Rock music by San Francisco experimental/rock band Karate High School has captured enough popularity among fans to win the prestigious Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 10 contest. Karate High School was voted one of the top 4 bands and has won over $10,000 of musical equipment. In addition, Karate High School is a Battle of the Bands 10 showcase winner entitling them to many more prizes. As a showcase winner, KHS will be performing live at the Van's Warped Tour afterparty at The Key Club on Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California on Thursday, November 30th. Show starts at 7:30PM. The band will also be featured on the Ernie Ball compilation CD which will be in stores everywhere 11/26/06. The Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 10 contest judges selected the winning bands based on musicianship, originality, ability to draw an audience, and live energy. More info is at http://www.battleofthebands.com. Formed in San Francisco, California, Karate High School has painted an unusual musical landscape that stems from their love for DIY rock and classic video games. The band focuses on transporting the listener to a truck stop of a new dimension, a place where low-bit arcade systems collide with semi-trucks carrying loud orchestra hits and punishing guitar riffs. Karate High School is: Paul McGuire - vocals, keyboards; Gabe Ausiello - guitars; Paul Bautista - keyboards; Dan Kingdon - bass; and Danny Glaspy - drums. Displaying an intense Do-It-Yourself work ethic, Arcade Rock was self-produced and recorded in vocalist/keyboardist Paul McGuire’s studio apartment. With two self-funded national tours under their belt, Karate High School has created a buzz in the underground scene with their unpredictable, manic live performances. With virtually no major nationwide radio play or marketing, Karate High School has been able to amass over a strong, rabid following in the underground rock scene. “We are all video game nerds, and that’s a big influence on our music,” says Bautista. In addition to citing bands such as Refused, Talking Heads, and Quicksand as influences, Karate High School draws inspiration from classic videogame composers including Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu. Arcade Rock is not just the name of their debut album, but perhaps the best way to describe their musical approach. Combining traditional punk rock and post-hardcore sensibilities with the distinctive mark of a band brought up on games and cartoon music, Karate High School is indeed paving new ground. Arcade Rock was produced and recorded by Paul McGuire, mastered by Alan Douches (Fallout Boy /Brand New/The Chemical Brothers/Dillinger Escape Plan) and mixed by Drew Mazurek (Linkin Park/Nothingface/ Jawbox/HIM) at HighView Studios in Baltimore, Maryland. The crisp production work results in an album full of infectious guitar hooks, a steady rhythm section and a one-two punch of melodic and abrasive vocal styles, all highlighted by a unique keyboard element that truly sets the band apart.
