Orlando

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 06, 2006 ) Orlando, FL -- The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 25 (FOP), representing over 650 Orlando Police Officers and Sergeants, is concerned about Orlando’s current ranking as one of the most violent cities in America. Although Florida has long held the distinction of being one of the most violent with regards to assaults on Police Officers, Orlando citizens have enjoyed a relatively low violent crime rate in their neighborhoods. The FOP believes that crime could worsen without further commitment by our elected leaders on the Orlando City Council. The SAFE Orlando Task Force’s Law Enforcement Subcommittee, created by Mayor Dyer and composed of 25 representatives from our community, has recently issued a report identifying areas of concern which have previously been reported as concerns by Orlando Police Officers themselves. The purpose of the Task Force was to work in tandem with the Orlando Police Department to tackle crime-related issues and help develop a strategic action plan using police, volunteer and community resources. They have made the following recommendations of their concerns to our Mayor:“…staffing in patrol, recruiting and hiring, and alternative funding sources to increase future police staffing.”“Recruiting of qualified applicants needs to be a top priority.”“Raise starting salaries to Pay Grade III for lateral transfers of experienced officers.”“Signing bonuses and moving allowances should be utilized as a recruiting tool for potential applicants…”“It is the subcommittee’s recommendation that a goal of the City of Orlando should be ‘1000 Officers by 2010!’”While the current strength of the Orlando Police Department is 723 (October 21, 2006, Chief’s Staffing Report), the effective strength is much lower. Once you subtract Management Employees, Police Academy Trainees, Light Duty Officers, those on Military Duty, Officers on vacation and assigned to the Airport Division you are nearer 500. Additionally, there are now 72 officers eligible for retirement. The FOP feels it is important for the citizens of Orlando to know that it takes about 18 months for an officer to complete training before being released for solo patrol.City officials recently approved an additional 25 officers per year over the next three years. The Subcommittee, selected by our Mayor, feels that 25 officers is not enough and recommends an increase of 100 officers per year for a total of 1000 by 2010.The FOP supports the proposals of the Law Enforcement Subcommittee and asks that all concerned citizens contact their elected representatives on the Orlando City Council to voice their support of the Law Enforcement Subcommittee recommendations while the problem is still manageable. For further questions please contact the FOP Labor Committee Office at (407) 317-9029.WWW.FOP25.COM###
