DC's Bossa Bistro and Lounge Announces August Performance Lineup

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 08, 2007 ) Washington, DC - Washington, DC eatery and live performance venue Bossa Bistro and Lounge located at 2463 18th Street, NW, is proud to present their performance lineup for August, 2007 featuring world class jazz musicians including popular DC jazz musicians Nayas and Satabdi Express. Sunday, August 5, 2007: Nayas: 9PM Nayas was born at the end of 2001 when Soy Lopez and Luis Torrealva met in the heart of Washington DC. Sharing a similar musical taste they started writing songs in the backyard surrounded by the smell of asaditos, beers, friends and the uncertainty of staying in the states. After years of playing and having some reincarnations, Nayas stepped up as one of the most important bands in the DC metropolitan area playing in festivals, small and big venues and sharing the stage with the names of Vilma Palma, Amigos Invisibles, El Gran Silencio, Kinky, Volumen Cero, Yerba Buena and other local bands. Nayas music is like a Shaman's bag with infusions for every soul with songs ranging from Reggae Roots stylee to frenzy dancing Ska and back to poetic South American flavors; their lyrics come from a very personal vison of the world but also a vision that is a common share between people about happiness, apreciation of simplicity, realtionships, community, real values and friendship, everything spiced up with good humor and giving a positive message. Nayas members are from Uruguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and United States and maybe you will see them on the neighborhood eating a quick taco or drinking pisco sours after midnight...http://www.myspace.com/nayas. Monday, August 6, 2007: Improviso; 9:30PM Sunday, August 12, 2007: The Young Lions: 9:30PM It all became so simple after listening to Ibrahim's Dream: a live recording at Café Nema by three of the most prolific jazz musicians inhabiting the east coast. The trio: The Young Lions, are consistent with the very essence of instrumental prose…a delicate rendition of anticipation and melodic democracy, undermined by a relentless force of punctuations and riffs. Yes, the resurrection of live jazz as conveyed by this vanguard - yet classically endowed - group titled, The Young Lions is among us. Band members: Allyn Johnson (Keys, moog, rhodes); Kris Funn (acoustic bass); and Quincy Phillips (Drums)http://www.myspace.com/theylion. Monday, August 13. 2007: Satabi Express Named after a famous train in India, Satabdi Express is the brainchild of guitarist/songwriter/composer Dave Cipriani. Satabdi Express combines the ancient with the modern, while striving to maintain authenticity and a sense of heart. Combining the sounds of North Indian Classical music with classic jazz instrumentation and sensibility, the music also brings in other American influences such as country blues, folk and funk, with hints of middle eastern and flamenco sounds as well. Dave Cipriani was recently named a 2006 recipient of the Individual Artist Award in Solo Instrumental Performance from the Maryland State Arts Council , in part for his work with Satabdi Express. Dave studied classical guitar in college, and also studied jazz privately for a year and a half with the late jazz guitar legend Charlie Byrd. After that he attended master class with renowned classical guitar virtuoso Christopher Parkening. He led several bands after college, combining his knowledge with the singer-songwriter and rock traditions. In 1998 Dave began studying Hindustani or North Indian Classical Music, on slide guitar, first with sitar Maestro Jay Kishor, then in 2003 with Indian slide guitar master Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, one of the senior most disciples of Ravi Shankar. Cipriani traveled to India in 2004 and 2005 to study with Pal, and currently plays Indian and Indian influenced music on a 19-string guitar that originally had been custom built for Barun Kumar Pal. Satabdi Express is rounded out by Adam Hopkins on upright bass and Chris Lerch on drums. Adam Hopkins holds a master's degree in double bass from Michigan State University. He has extensive freelance experience in jazz and orchestral performance in Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia. Chris Lerch has played drums for many groups in the Baltimore area, including the Charm City Klesmer Band, the Michael Raitzik Band, and the Faith & Doubt Orchestra & Revue, another project of Dave Cipriani. http://www.davecipriani.com/satabdi.html Sunday, August 19, 2007: The Vampire Monkeys - 9PM The experimental/ambient/jazz music by The Vampire Monkeys band members Matt Rippetoe, saxophone/effects/loops; John Lee, guitar/effects/loops; and Larry Ferguson, percussion/glockenspiel/apple http://www.myspace.com/thevampiremonkeys Monday, August 20, 2007: Dan Roberts Group: 9:30PM The Dan Roberts Trio is a Washington, DCarea trio comprised of pianist/arranger/composer Dan Roberts, drummer/percussionist Larry Ferguson, and bassist Jeff Reed (www.jeffreedbass.com). There is a cd of that instrumentation doing a complete reworking of the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi" album available at cdbaby (cdbaby.com/cd/robertsdan). The group has morphed recently into the Dan Roberts Band, consisting of Dan on keys, Larry on drums, John Lee on guitar, and Matt Rippetoe on tenor sax. this version of the group is playing primarily original music composed by Dan. The new instrumentation and the new material is still jazz based with improvisation, but relies heavily on rock/indie rock rhythms and textures as well as electronic music. If you were a fan of hearing the group playing tunes by the Flaming Lips, David Bowie, Radiohead, The Shins, don't worry; they still throw those in with the original material.http://www.myspace.com/danrobertstriojazz.
