(Medical-NewsWire.com, September 24, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Instances of genitals warts have dropped by 17% among women ages 15-25. The drop was over a five-year period spanning from 2006 to 2010. Rates in men remained consistent.
Amy Leval of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm said the finding is likely a sign of the vaccine working. She cautions that not enough women have been vaccinated to men to be successfully protected.
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of the genital warts, and certain strains can lead to cervical cancer. Many of the cancer-causing strains have no noticeable signs in men, making its presence and subsequent heightened risk of penile and anal cancers more difficult to note.
U.S. experts welcome the results, but would rather err on the side of caution, stating: "It's exactly what we would like to see,” said Dr. Michael Brady, an expert in pediatric infectious diseases at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He added, "It is a little early to suggest that we know this is a vaccine response."
Bradley added, “"In order to really document this was related to the vaccine, you have to look at those who got the vaccine and those who didn't," he said.”
The work published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases is the first to use data from the entire population of a country in regards to genital wart infection. This is possible due to the use of national drug registries that notes how many people between ages 10 to 44 were treated for genital warts.
The use of drug registries for data collection does mean that the actual national total may be lower, as non-drug treatments can be done at private practices, wherein warts can be frozen off.
