Turmeric for Diabetes and Mistletoe for Cancer: Next-Gen Remedies Reports T33

(Medical-NewsWire.com, October 22, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Researchers from Thailand are hoping that further research into turmeric and mistletoe extract reinforce their preliminary findings: that reductions from the pair of plants may prove useful in repairing liver damage and, potentially, cancer.

A study published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand last week from researchers at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok noted that a polyphenol found in turmeric, called curcumin, showed signs of reversing liver damage when administered to rats with diabetes. Rats whose livers had been attacked by symptoms of the disorder, which is increasing prevalent in humans, showed signs of recovery after being given the extract.

The Bangkok-based researchers noted in their report: “Fascinatingly, liver microvasculature in curcumin treated group developed into regenerate and repair into healthy and normal characteristics. These results optimistically demonstrated the potential use of curcumin as a novel therapeutic agent in liver pathology of diabetic rats.”

The research team hopes that their work will help people who show a high likelihood of developing diabetes, but who have yet to develop the disease to avoid the condition altogether: “Our study showed that the curcumin extract can effectively prevent the prediabetes population from developing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although we found that the results were quite remarkable, a longer trial may be required to see if the curcumin-treated prediabetes population will eventually develop type 2 diabetes mellitus.”

Turmeric, a spice from the root of the Curcyma longa (a member of the ginger family) is commonly found in South Asian dishes such as curry, Tikka Masala, korma and more, to which it imparts its signature deep mustard-colored hue.

In a different report published on the Daily Mail London website claims that a man has been cured an aggressive type of cancer that should have claimed his life years ago. The apparent miracle-cure came in the form of mistletoe injections, which is used widely in Europe as a cancer treatment.

John Edrich, the acclaimed English cricketer of the 1960’s and 1970’s, is a believer in the power of mistletoe to stop cancer. Diagnosed with blood cancer in 2000, Edrich’s health deteriorated badly in 2005. He credits his recovery to the mistletoe injections given to him by his Aberdeen doctor: “My quality of life was grim. I said to my wife, Judith, ‘This is the end’. I was so tired and lethargic, I couldn’t do anything. Then three or four days later a friend of a friend rang me and said I had to see Dr. Geider because his treatment had worked wonders with another patient.”
