Los Angeles Cosmetic Dentist Follows Coconut Oil Research for Healthier Teeth

/EINPresswire.com/ LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - A research team from Ireland's Athelone Institute of Technology has new information on how coconut oil prevents tooth decay. The team shared its findings at the Society of General Microbiology's conference in September.

Los Angeles cosmetic dentist Dr. Joseph Marvizi read SGM's press release outlining the study. Coconut oil has antibiotic properties that keep oral bacteria at bay, reducing patients' need for fillings and dental implants.

Bacteria are naturally found in the mouth, including Streptococcus strains like Streptococcus mutans. S. mutans creates acids that break down tooth enamel and cause decay, says Marvizi, dentist in Long beach CA. Researchers examined raw coconut oil and enzyme altered coconut oil against common oral bacteria. Altered coconut oil imitates how oils react with digestion. Results showed that the enzyme altered oil inhibited the production of many common Streptococcus strains. Researchers followed a comparable study where enzyme-altered milk restricted S. mutans from bonding to dental enamel.

"Our research has shown that digested milk protein not only reduced the adherence of harmful bacteria to human intestinal cells but also prevented some of them from gaining entrance into the cell," head researcher Dr. Damien Brady says. "We are currently researching coconut oil and other enzyme-modified foodstuffs to identify how they interfere with the way bacteria cause illness and disease."

Brady and his team are encouraging the use of coconut oil in oral health products to further strengthen and protect teeth. Brady says cavities are frequently disregarded, even though they affect 60-90 percent of patients in developed countries. Digested coconut oil could help reduce cavities.

Los Angeles dentist Marvizi wants patients to enjoy healthy teeth throughout their lives. In Los Angeles, Invisalign straightens teeth to movie star status, and routine oral care keeps those teeth beautiful and strong.

Patients can integrate coconut oil into many favorite recipes. Coconut oil tastes great in hot tea and blended drinks such as smoothies. Indian and Thai cuisines often feature coconut oil. Many people enjoy baking with coconut oil, but patients should be careful to limit sugar intake for ideal oral health. Sugar can be harmful to teeth.
