CoQ10 and Vitamin Beneficial to Ward off Coronary Artery Disease Reports DailyQ

(Medical-NewsWire.com, November 10, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Patients who suffer from coronary artery disease, were noted as having lowered levels of the nutrients CoQ10 and B6, prompting researchers to hypothesize an increase in Coenzyme Q10 and B6 would help reduce risk of such a disease.

“With respect to the relationship between coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin B6 and the Risk of coronary artery disease, the present results showed that a higher level of coenzyme Q10 (at least 516 nmol/L) or vitamin B6 (at least 59.7 nmol/L) was significantly associated with a lower risk of CAD,” wrote researchers.

CoQ10, or coenzyme Q10, plays an important role in the production of energy in mitochondria by participating in adenosine triphosphate production.

The CoQ10 has been studied to determine its capability in cognitive health, heart health, and antiaging (oral and topical forms). It has shown some preliminary benefits to those suffering from angina, heart attack, and hypertension.

Vitamin B6, a water-soluble nutrient that is found in meats, whole grain products, vegetable, and nuts is also being studied for the same capabilities.

Researchers in Taiwan have performed control studies on case groups that involved 45 people with CAD, as well as 87 healthy individuals. Blood levels of CoQ10 and B6 were measured, and CAD patients had significantly lower levels of both nutrients when compared to the control group.
B6 appeared to lose any statistical value after accounting for variables, but CoQ10 seemed important in association to reducing risk of CAD.

“Age is known to be an independent risk factor for CAD, and the patients suffering from CAD may experience losses of coenzyme Q10 because they are under higher oxidative stress due to aging and disease,” wrote the researchers.

“Therefore, it is beneficial to administer coenzyme Q10 to CAD patients to reduce oxidative stress and increase the activities of antioxidant enzymes.”

The researchers also noted that B6 supplements ought also be provide to people with CAD.
“Vitamin B-6 may not only encourage better endogenous synthesis of coenzyme Q10 but also decrease the homocysteine concentration, which is particularly notable because of homocysteine concentration was unchanged after coenzyme Q10 supplementation,” they stated.
